A runaway garbage truck tore through the front of an unoccupied Lorton house late Tuesday morning, carving into the structure and coming to rest partly in the basement while peeling away a chunk of the facade. The crash, in the 7600 block of Henry Knox Drive just after 11 a.m., brought a multi‑unit response from Fairfax County fire and rescue crews. One person was evaluated at the scene, and no firefighters were reported injured.
Fire officials said the truck ended up on top of a gas meter and an electrical transformer in the home’s lower level, a worst‑case landing spot that forced crews to cut service to the neighborhood while they figured out how to get the vehicle out safely. Gas and power were shut off to roughly 80 nearby homes, with residents warned outages could stretch for several hours, according to WJLA. The department called the location of the utility equipment in the basement a complicating factor for recovery teams.
Quick Response Captured On Scanner Audio
Scanner traffic and on‑scene reports indicate firefighters arrived within minutes and found the truck lodged against the side of the single‑family home, according to FFXnow. A caller told dispatch that the garbage truck had gone into the house, and medics checked out one person at the scene who did not need to be taken to a hospital, the outlet reported.
Damage, Photos And Unanswered Questions
Photos from the scene show siding ripped away and part of the front facade collapsed, with the truck wedged awkwardly into the home, FOX5 reported. Crews confirmed the house was unoccupied when the vehicle slammed into it, sparing anyone inside from injury.
Fairfax County Fire & Rescue shared images of the massive truck sitting in the damaged structure while crews worked with utility companies on shutoffs and the delicate removal operation, Patch noted. Officials said they had not yet disclosed what caused the crash as that work continued into the afternoon.
