One person was killed and two others were hurt Saturday in a brutal head-on crash on a rural stretch near OK-18 at E 1070 Road in Lincoln County, authorities said.
According to investigators, a car heading north crossed the center line and slammed into a southbound vehicle, sending both cars off the roadway. The driver of the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The northbound driver and a passenger in the southbound car were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries whose severity was not immediately known.
Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol stayed on scene as investigators worked the wreck and documented the crash site.
KFOR reported that emergency crews spent hours clearing the area after the collision near OK-18 and E 1070 Road. First responders used extraction tools to free people trapped in the vehicles, according to KFOR, and local medics transported the injured to area hospitals. Officials did not immediately release the names of those involved.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol told KFOR that the northbound vehicle "went left of center" before hitting the southbound car head-on. Troopers said "the scene is under further investigation" in their preliminary account.
Statewide safety context
On Oklahoma’s rural roads, head-on crashes remain among the deadliest types of collisions, and state safety officials keep a close eye on those trends. According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, the state backs programs that target fatal wrecks on rural two-lane highways through a mix of enforcement, engineering projects and public education campaigns.
Investigators said they plan to release more information, including any citations or contributing factors, once the full crash report is finished. Anyone who may have additional details about the collision is asked to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
