A Thursday evening shooting on one of Shaler Township’s busiest stretches sent a man to the hospital and put another person in custody, according to police. Allegheny County dispatchers said emergency crews were sent to the 1400 block of Mount Royal Boulevard around 5:40 p.m. The victim was taken to a hospital and was alert and talking with medics at the scene.
What police say
Shaler Township Police Chief Sean Frank told WPXI that officers found a male victim when they arrived and that another male was taken into custody. Frank said police have not yet released the ages of either the victim or the person in custody, and that investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. The Allegheny County Police Department was called in to assist with the investigation, according to the report.
Local context
Mount Royal Boulevard is a busy north-hills corridor that has seen its share of high-profile emergency calls in recent years. In August, a vehicle crashed into a Dollar Tree at the Mt. Royal Shopping Center, disrupting the shopping strip and drawing a large emergency response, according to WTAE. Incidents on this stretch tend to trigger a quick, multi-agency mobilization, and Thursday’s shooting was no exception.
What’s next
Detectives remained on scene Thursday as the investigation continued, and police have not released additional details about a possible motive or any potential charges. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Shaler Township Police Department; contact information is listed on the department website, Shaler Township Police Department.
