San Diego County drivers rolled out yesterday to a number nobody wanted to see on the marquee: an average of just over $6 a gallon for regular self-serve gas. The countywide average hit roughly $6.01, adding one more hit to commuters and households already juggling steep living costs.

According to data from AAA, San Diego County’s average for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline landed at $6.012 yesterday. AAA’s county figures show the price is 16 cents higher than a week ago, 9 cents above the month-ago level and nearly $1.24 more than this time last year. It is still about 42 cents shy of the all-time record of $6.435 set on Oct. 5, 2022, which passes for good news only in the most technical sense.

NBC 7 San Diego first spotlighted the latest spike, talking with local drivers who said they are feeling the squeeze every time they fill up. The outlet noted the county average crossed the $6 mark for the first time since late February, when tensions in the Middle East rattled oil markets and nudged prices higher.

Why prices are rising

Analysts are pointing to a familiar culprit: more expensive crude and a healthy dose of geopolitical nerves. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, warned that "Oil prices have been climbing again," and said stalled talks between the U.S. and Iran are helping push both crude and retail gasoline higher, as reported by Axios.

What this means for drivers

The national average is hovering around $4.18 per gallon while California as a whole is sitting near $5.97, leaving San Diego drivers paying even more of a premium at the pump. AAA lists the national average at $4.176 and the California average at $5.965 as of Tuesday, a gap that for many families will translate directly into higher monthly transportation bills.

Anyone trying to shave a few cents off the total is turning to station-level price trackers and cash-back offers. GasBuddy compiles prices from more than 150,000 stations and remains a go-to tool for scoping out cheaper options around town. With no clear diplomatic breakthrough on the horizon, analysts say the roller coaster at the pump is likely to keep rattling local budgets in the near term.
