What started as a quiet Sunday morning in San Pedro turned tense when firefighters raced to Point Fermin after a person was spotted at the base of the park’s rocky bluffs, triggering a full technical cliff rescue. Rescue swimmers, air units, and crews on land and sea converged on the shoreline below the cliffs to reach the patient.
According to LAFD, the incident was logged as INC#0493 at about 8:41 a.m. Fire Station 48 was dispatched along with South Bureau resources, and the department’s initial alert noted that "rescue swimmers are making their way to the patient" while "air, land, and marine assets" were on scene. In other words, this was not a minimalist response.
Where It Happened
Point Fermin Park, at 807 Paseo Del Mar in City Council District 15, is one of those spots that is both stunning and unforgiving. That location detail comes via the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
The bluffs near the Sunken City and the Point Fermin Lighthouse have seen more than their share of trouble, with past falls and rescues in the same general area. Those include a June 16, 2024, cliff incident described as One Dead, Another Rescued, and a separate May 2024 fatality reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Rescue Response
City dispatch information and the department’s alert show that this was a full-scale coastal operation, with specialized teams assigned to get rescuers safely down to the shore and stabilize the patient. Air Operations, battalion chiefs, engine and truck companies, ambulances, and rope and rescue teams were all listed in the response, with Fire Station 48 and multiple South Bureau units among those sent to the scene.
What We Know Now
At the time of the initial alert, officials had not yet released details about the patient’s condition or transport. Further information will be added as LAFD and local officials provide updates.
