Lorain County Metro Parks just gave Sandy Ridge Reservation a serious boost, quietly adding a hefty 207-acre west-side parcel that the City of North Ridgeville spotlighted in an April 22, 2026 social media post. The new chunk of land, informally branded “Sandy Ridge West” by the city, brings in more forest and wet-meadow habitat, along with a short loop trail and a fresh trailhead on Case Road. City photos show newly cleared trail edges and a small gravel parking lot, a clear sign that this corner of the reservation is now ready for visitors.
City Shares First Look At Sandy Ridge West
According to the City of North Ridgeville Government, Lorain County Metro Parks has added roughly 207 acres to Sandy Ridge Reservation and is referring to the new area as Sandy Ridge West, a mix of forest and wet-meadow habitats. The city notes that a loop trail starts at a parking lot on Case Road and backs that up with several on-the-ground photos giving residents a preview of the new space.
Trailhead Work, Bids And Timeline
Public bidding records show the park district advertised work for a meadow trail and trailhead at 7020 Case Road and ultimately awarded the job to Srokowski Construction in mid 2025. The specifications called for a 14-car gravel parking lot and roughly 1.5 miles of new gravel trail, according to ConstructConnect. The city’s 2025 annual report also notes that Lorain County Metro Parks created a new parking area and trails on the west side of Case Road last year, further opening up access to the reservation for nearby neighbors.
Why Birders And Neighbors Should Care
Local birding groups already treat Sandy Ridge as a go-to migration hotspot, and the extra mix of meadow and forest-edge habitat at Sandy Ridge West is expected to give those outings even more to work with, according to the Black River Audubon Society. With a new trailhead on Case Road, the walk to prime habitat edges that draw warblers, waterfowl and other spring migrants just got a bit shorter, which is good news for both serious birders and casual walkers looking for a quick nature fix.
How To Visit
The new trailhead sits at 7020 Case Road. Sandy Ridge Reservation itself covers about 526 acres, with the main visitor center at 6195 Otten Road and park hours generally listed as 8 a.m. to sunset, according to Lorain County Metro Parks.
