Boston police are asking neighbors and late-night shoppers to help piece together what happened after shots were fired at South Bay Mall in Dorchester on Thursday evening. Officers say the report came in around 8:45 p.m., and detectives later shared surveillance stills that appear to show several people arriving at and leaving the area on a motor scooter. Investigators are urging anyone who recognizes those individuals or who has relevant footage to step forward.
According to the Boston Police Department (Official), detectives from District C-6 said the shots-fired incident happened in the South Bay Mall area near 1 Allstate Rd. on April 16. The department believes the posted stills and short video clips could help advance the investigation and is specifically asking anyone with photos or video to send them in so investigators can identify the people shown.
The department notes that anonymous tips are accepted through its Crime Stoppers program. Tipsters can text "TIP" to 27463 or call 1-800-494-8477, and police say identities will be kept confidential, in line with the Boston Police Crime Stoppers page. Anyone with direct information can also call District C-6 detectives at (617) 343-4742, and the station's contact details appear in the department directory.
Police Released Images And Asked For Footage
Detectives say the surveillance stills show multiple people coming into and leaving the mall parking area on a motor scooter. They are asking residents and visitors to check doorbell cameras, dash-cams, phones or body-camera footage for anything that might show who was involved around the time of the incident. The department's Facebook post also notes that photos and videos can be submitted anonymously and repeats that police will protect the identities of tipsters.
Local Context For Shoppers And Residents
South Bay Mall and its surrounding parking lots have drawn police attention in past years after reports of gunfire and disturbances, a pattern local outlets have documented in earlier coverage. Previous reporting by local television stations has highlighted earlier shots-fired calls at the plaza, which helps explain why detectives are now pressing the public to look back through phones, home security systems and vehicle cameras for potential evidence.
Police advise anyone who captured the incident to preserve the original files and note the time and location before sending them in. For questions or to share information directly with investigators, callers can reach District C-6 detectives at (617) 343-4742 or use the anonymous tip options outlined by the department.
