Coastal Seafoods' St. Paul storefront is calling it quits this Saturday, April 11, bringing a permanent end to a brief Macalester-Groveland run that bundled fresh fish retail with The Dive restaurant and a roomy outdoor patio. The move caught neighborhood regulars off guard, since the shop had been in its current location for less than three years.

As reported by Bring Me The News, Coastal Seafoods announced the closure in a Facebook post, telling customers, "Our last day of service will be April 11, and we'd truly love to see you before then." The post also confirmed that the company’s Minneapolis location will stay open.

History and ownership

According to Coastal Seafoods, the business started in the early 1980s as a wholesale fish operation before expanding into retail. The retail brand was acquired in 2016 by Chicago-based distributor Fortune Fish & Gourmet, which credits the deal with expanding its reach across the Midwest.

The company moved its Minneapolis counter into a significantly larger space in 2020, according to Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. It then opened the expanded St. Paul site, complete with The Dive restaurant, in late 2023, per CBS Minnesota.

What diners will miss

The St. Paul location housed The Dive, a compact seafood spot turning out lobster rolls, oysters, fish tacos and a tuna smash burger that Eater Twin Cities spotlighted on its best-burgers map.

While the St. Paul team finishes its final week of service, the Minneapolis counter will remain in operation, Bring Me The News notes.
