Brown water out of the tap was not how Seaview residents planned to wrap up Tuesday. Late in the day, neighbors in West Seattle's Seaview area reported brown tap water, with at least one person seeing the discoloration near 47th Avenue SW and SW Juneau Street. The sudden change set off calls and texts along the block as people tried to figure out whether it was routine hydrant testing or a possible water main break.
The initial neighborhood tip went to West Seattle Blog, which urged anyone seeing discolored water to call Seattle Public Utilities at 206-386-1800. The post noted that causes can range from hydrant testing to broader water system problems and said nothing was showing on the city's outage map at that time.
What Seattle Public Utilities Says
Seattle Public Utilities says sudden discoloration often comes from rust or sediment that gets stirred up when the flow in a water main changes. Fire hydrant use, valve activity or nearby work are listed as common triggers, and the utility recommends running cold water to see if the water clears. Seattle Public Utilities also advises avoiding hot water use during a brown water episode and contacting its Operations Response Center at (206) 386-1800 if the problem does not clear.
This is not a first for Seaview. Neighborhood posts and past dispatches have flagged similar brown water spells over recent years, often after hydrant flushing or testing. West Seattle Blog has tracked several of these incidents and has underscored that reporting problems helps Seattle Public Utilities determine whether the issue is limited to a single property or points to a system level problem.
What Residents Should Do
If your tap water runs brown, Seattle Public Utilities suggests running cold water for a few minutes, saving a sample for possible inspection and avoiding laundry until the water clears. SPU asks customers to call the Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800 if the water does not return to normal.
