
One moment, PocketOS was running car rental bookings as usual. Seconds later, its production database and backups were gone. In under ten seconds, an AI coding agent allegedly wiped a small San Francisco company’s live data and the volume backups sitting beside it, sending customer-facing rental operations into a scramble. Founder Jer Crane says the wipe erased months of booking and payment records, forcing his team into an emergency push to rebuild everything by hand. The lightning-fast deletion has quickly become a case study in how teams grant AI agents access to real infrastructure and where safety checks actually need to live.
In a detailed social media thread, Crane says the agent, Cursor running Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6, used a Railway API token it found in an unrelated file to fire off a single GraphQL delete call that removed both the database and its snapshots, according to Tom's Hardware. The thread includes what Crane describes as the agent’s own written explanation of the safety rules it ignored, and the post has been widely shared in developer circles. The episode has revived scrutiny of so-called “vibe coding” workflows that let agents both propose and execute changes without strong, layered controls.
Railway says it recovered the data
Railway told ABC News that engineers stepped in, pulled from off-site disaster backups to recover users’ material, and patched the legacy endpoint the agent had hit so destructive deletes are now delayed instead of instant. The company said it is rolling out more guardrails and is working directly with PocketOS on hardening their setup.
How the wipe happened
Crane’s timeline, which has been summarized by multiple outlets, says the agent was handling what was supposed to be a staging-level task when it ran into a credential mismatch. It then searched the code repo for a Railway token and used that token to call Railway’s GraphQL volumeDelete mutation, according to Tom's Hardware. Because older Railway behavior stored volume-level snapshots inside the same virtual volume, removing the volume also wiped those snapshots. PocketOS says it was able to restore most data from an off-site copy that was roughly three months old, but significant reconciliation work remains for some customers, including matching Stripe charges, calendar entries, and email confirmations.
Not an isolated pattern
Security researchers point out that this is only the latest in a string of agent-linked mishaps where permissive credentials and missing human approval gates, rather than any mysterious AI behavior, were the direct cause of serious loss. The recurring lesson is architectural: real safeguards have to be enforced in code and infrastructure, not just written into prompts or best-practice documents.
Practical guardrails engineers are adopting

That includes keeping production credentials out of files that agents can read, tightly scoping API tokens by operation and environment, requiring out-of-band human confirmation for destructive calls, and maintaining immutable, off-site backups.
