A viewer-shot video appears to show a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy firing a Taser as a motorcyclist speeds away, just before the rider crashes into an SUV on Hypoluxo Road in Lantana, leaving the 27-year-old with serious head injuries. The collision happened Thursday night after the rider allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at Sea Pines Way and Hypoluxo Road. Emergency crews rushed him to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where officials said he met trauma-alert criteria.
Video obtained by WPEC/CBS12 shows the rider on a Kawasaki motorcycle accelerating away as the deputy deploys the Taser. Moments later, the bike collides with a white Volkswagen SUV and the motorcyclist is thrown onto the pavement, according to the station. The footage, submitted by a viewer, also includes still images that capture the sequence of the crash.
In a statement, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop after witnessing alleged reckless driving and issued commands for the rider to comply. When he refused, deputies deployed the Taser. According to the agency, the rider fled from the Hypoluxo Food Mart parking lot, crossed onto Hypoluxo Road, made it roughly 15 yards, lost control of the motorcycle, then struck the SUV.
Timeline from stop to crash
WPEC/CBS12 reports that the video shows the rider turning onto Hypoluxo Road after leaving the lot, with deputies attempting to get him off the bike before the Taser is used. According to WPEC/CBS12, the force of the impact sent the rider over the SUV’s windshield and left him with severe head trauma.
Why this matters
Motorcycle crashes often end badly for the person on two wheels, and statewide numbers drive that home. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reports that in 2024 more than 600 motorcyclists were killed and over 2,000 suffered serious injuries. High speed, close calls with other vehicles, and split-second decisions at stop-controlled intersections can turn a traffic violation into a life-altering event.
Investigators with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are reviewing the circumstances of the crash. The agency has not yet released the rider’s name or said whether any charges are on the table. This story will be updated as authorities release more details.
