A man died Saturday after a hit-and-run crash in the Soundview section of the Bronx, just steps from Jacobi Medical Center, according to police. The collision happened around 5:30 at the intersection of Bruckner Boulevard and White Plains Road. Emergency crews rushed the victim to Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.
Officers were called to the scene after a 911 report of a person lying in the roadway. They found the man with trauma to his body and severe head injuries, and EMS transported him to the hospital, as reported by News 12 New York. Investigators say the driver did not stay at the scene, and no arrests have been made.
Citywide Street-Safety Context
This latest death comes even as New York City has been touting record-low traffic fatalities. In 2025, the city recorded 205 traffic deaths overall, with pedestrian fatalities down about 9 percent from the year before. The Department of Transportation credited Vision Zero street redesigns and stepped-up enforcement for the drop. Still, deadly crashes like the one in Soundview continue to claim lives across the boroughs, including the Bronx. NYC DOT outlined the 2025 figures.
Investigation Underway
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with potential witnesses as they work to identify the vehicle and driver, according to News 12 New York. Police say the victim was found in the roadway with severe head trauma, and the striking vehicle had already fled by the time first responders arrived.
Legal Consequences
Under New York law, drivers involved in crashes that cause injury are required to stop, exchange information, and report the incident. Leaving the scene of a crash that results in serious injury or death can trigger criminal charges and, in some circumstances, felony prosecution. The state's court guidance on Vehicle and Traffic Law §600 explains those duties and the penalties when injury or death occurs, per N.Y. court guidance.
The NYPD is investigating the collision in Soundview. We will update this story if authorities release more information.
