A late-night walk turned deadly on Selinsky Road in southeast Houston on Friday, when a person sitting on a curb was struck and killed, according to police. The crash happened in the 5400 block of Selinsky, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the Houston Police Department have opened a probe into what led up to the collision.
According to Click2Houston, southeast patrol officers responded around 10:20 p.m. to the one-vehicle, one-pedestrian crash. The outlet reports that the 30-year-old driver stayed at the scene, did not show signs of impairment, and that Houston Fire Department crews pronounced the pedestrian dead. Investigators told the station a witness tried to move the person out of the roadway and described the area as poorly lit. The HPD Vehicular Crimes Division is handling the case.
Pedestrian deaths remain a local problem
Data compiled by Axios from the Texas Department of Transportation shows Houston recorded 300 traffic deaths in 2025, including 99 pedestrian fatalities. The numbers highlight a stubborn risk to people on foot, even as the city saw a slight dip from the previous year’s peak.
City programs emphasize lighting, redesigns
Houston’s Vision Zero initiative points to street redesigns, improved crossings and better lighting as key tools to reduce pedestrian deaths. The city’s annual report (Vision Zero report) lists projects aimed at making high injury corridors safer. Targeted changes, including added sidewalks, upgraded crosswalks and reconsidered lane configurations, are all part of the strategy to cut down on fatal crashes.
Selinsky corridor has seen safety concerns before
Hoodline previously reported a fatal stabbing on Selinsky Road in October 2024, underscoring how stretches of the corridor have drawn attention for public safety issues. Neighbors and advocates have pointed to gaps in lighting and pedestrian infrastructure along parts of the southeast side as contributing to risk.
Authorities have not released the victim’s identity and no criminal charges have been announced. Per Click2Houston, the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating and may release more information as the case moves forward.
