A late-night jewelry sale in a Southwest Side apartment parking lot turned violent Wednesday when a would-be buyer pulled a gun and shot the seller, according to police. The victim was hit once in the leg and taken to a hospital, where he was last reported in stable condition. The shooter took off in a vehicle and has not been found as officers continue canvassing the area.

As reported by News 4 San Antonio, the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday at The Scott at Medio Creek Apartments off Excellence Drive near Old Pearsall Road. Officers told the outlet the two men met in the complex parking lot to exchange jewelry when the buyer suddenly demanded more items and pulled a gun.

The Scott at Medio Creek is a 300-plus unit apartment community on the Southwest Side that lists its address as 9130 Excellence Drive. The complex sits near Loop 410 and Old Pearsall Road, an area that has seen multiple policing responses in recent years.

What officers say

Police say the suspect drew a firearm and demanded additional items during the deal. When the seller refused, the two began fighting and the suspect fired once, hitting the seller in the leg. The shooter then left in a vehicle and the injured man was taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to News 4 San Antonio. Investigators are still searching the Southwest Side for the suspect.

Marketplace meetups can go wrong

Private in-person sales arranged online have turned violent before. Spectrum News reported a similar incident in 2019, when a buyer was shot during an OfferUp transaction on the South Side. The latest case again highlights the risk of meeting strangers for high-value items and why investigators keep urging people to use caution when setting up these exchanges.

San Antonio police are investigating and have not publicly identified any suspects. This story will be updated as authorities release more information.
