
A 20-year-old man was killed early Sunday after his SUV smashed into a tree and burst into flames on U.S. Highway 90 in Castroville. Police identified the driver as Roman Barron and said the single-vehicle crash happened in the 800 block of U.S. Highway 90 East. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to Castroville police, officers were called around 3:08 a.m. after reports of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near the Walmart on Highway 90. When officers arrived, they found a black Dodge Durango that had hit a tree and caught fire. An officer identified only as Thomas managed to extinguish the flames, and responders later found the driver inside and pronounced him dead, as reported by FOX San Antonio.
Highway 90 Is a Lifeline Through Castroville
U.S. Highway 90 cuts straight through Castroville and serves as one of the city’s main east-west arteries. Local officials note that Castroville officers, including reserve personnel, “watch over a major thoroughfare (Highway 90),” according to the City of Castroville.
Investigation Still Underway
Medina County Fire/EMS said Stations 10 and 11 were notified shortly after 3 a.m. and arrived in under six minutes, where they found the sole occupant had suffered “immediately fatal injuries.” Castroville police say speed is believed to have been a contributing factor and that the investigation is still ongoing. The department was assisted at the scene by Medina County EMS and the Medina County Sheriff's Office, according to FOX San Antonio.
