New Orleans nightlife is getting a quieter twist. Baldwin & Co. is rolling out an after-dark reading lounge at NOLA Art Bar on St. Claude that asks visitors to put down their phones and swap scrolling for actual conversation. The wine-and-books setup is billed as "not a party and not a library" and is designed for analog socializing during evening hours.

What to expect

As reported by Axios, Baldwin teased the after-dark lounge on Instagram with the tagline: "Bring a book. Order a glass. Put your phone away. Be somewhere real." The venue is planned to open next month at 2128 St. Claude Ave, and manager Taylor Murphy told Axios that devices will not be outright banned, but staff hope guests will set phones aside long enough to actually talk to one another.

The Axios piece also notes Charlotte owners who lock phones away for set periods and highlights influencer Andrea "Dre" Fox, who described a phone-free bar as "total disconnection" that made her feel more present.

Baldwin's background

According to the Baldwin & Co. website, the bookstore and coffee shop operates from 1030 Elysian Fields and hosts regular book clubs, readings and community programs. The new lounge will pop up at sister space NOLA Art Bar, which lists its address as 2128 St. Claude Ave.

Part of a national trend

Venues around the country are experimenting with ways to curb screen time and nudge people back into in-person connection. A December 2025 survey commissioned by ThriftBooks and conducted by Talker Research found that 63% of Gen Z intentionally disconnect from devices, a shift some operators are leaning into.

How other venues have done it

Some operators use formal measures, like time-locked pouches for phones, while others rely on social cues and programming to discourage constant scrolling. Baldwin's lounge appears to be taking the softer route, with a curated, book-forward night that nudges guests to be present without actually seizing anyone's devices.

The Baldwin & Co. lounge is slated to open in May at 2128 St. Claude Ave and will pair books, board games and a modest wine selection aimed at readers and small groups. Organizers say they want the space to feel like a gentler way to socialize, not a hardline crackdown on phones.
