A St. Louis County stabbing that left a 39-year-old man dead on Carrington Lane is now headed to adult court, with a 16-year-old girl facing serious felony charges.
Court filings show prosecutors have charged Dakota Merit with one count of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the fatal August 2025 stabbing. She is being held on a $300,000 cash-only bond with no 10 percent option, according to First Alert 4.
The victim, identified as 39-year-old Derrick Merit, was found with life-threatening stab wounds in the 200 block of Carrington Lane on Aug. 17, 2025, and later died. Police were called to the scene around 4:28 p.m., where officers found the wounded man, who was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued the charges Tuesday after a juvenile-court judge certified Merit’s case for adult prosecution, according to First Alert 4. Court documents reviewed by the outlet say the probable-cause paperwork links Merit to the stabbing that killed Derrick Merit.
Local coverage at the time of the killing noted a juvenile was taken into custody and detained by family court while detectives from the South County Precinct handled the investigation. Hoodline and other community outlets reported the original arrest in August, citing a St. Louis County Police release that identified the Carrington Lane scene and the immediate detention of a teenage suspect; see St. Louis County teen arrested for that earlier coverage.
What Happens Next
With Merit now certified as an adult, the case moves into adult criminal court and will be prosecuted under adult statutes. The charges were filed after the certification, per First Alert 4. Public court dockets are expected to list upcoming hearings and arraignment dates as the case moves forward, and the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office remains the lead on the prosecution.
