Bay Area chef Carlos Altamirano is about to slide into SoMa with a new player. Next month, the restaurateur behind several Peruvian hits and the former Michelin-starred La Costanera is set to debut Casa Sofia Kitchen and Bar just a block from Oracle Park, aiming squarely at both Giants fans and neighborhood regulars.
The concept is framed as a Latin American meets Californian dining room, taking over the former Brixton space and turning it into a high-capacity operation. Plans call for a sizable main dining room, private spaces and a deck built to handle those pre-game rushes and post-win celebrations.
Where and when
According to the San Francisco Business Times, Casa Sofia is on track to open in May 2026 near Oracle Park, and it will be Altamirano’s ninth Bay Area concept. The restaurant’s official materials list the address as 701 2nd Street in SoMa and describe the project as “Opening this Spring.” The launch date and ballpark-adjacent address look very intentionally timed to catch the wave of rising stadium foot traffic.
Design, menu and service
In an interview with SFGATE, Altamirano said Casa Sofia is named after his 10-year-old daughter and is slated to open in mid-May. Inside, he is planning roughly 120 seats in the main dining room, plus about 52 more across two private rooms.
The look will be anything but shy, with bold pink and green tones, murals and custom woodwork from a Berkeley artist. Designer Jon de la Cruz is credited with pulling the elements together. On the plate, the menu will feature Peruvian staples like ceviche and empanadas, layered with local, seasonal California produce. Behind the bar, Yuri Chauca, formerly of La Costanera, is leading the drinks program.
Altamirano's track record
Altamirano has quietly built a small restaurant empire around the Bay. The Altamirano Restaurant Group lists restaurants including Mochica, Piqueos, Parada, Barranco and the fine-dining spot Altamirano. His coastal restaurant La Costanera held a Michelin star in 2012 and 2013, as documented by the MICHELIN Guide, a credential that helps explain why every new project from the chef draws outsized attention.
Opening Casa Sofia in SoMa brings him back to familiar territory: Altamirano launched Mochica in the neighborhood in 2004, turning this latest move into something of a full-circle moment.
What it means for SoMa and fans
OpenTable listings and hiring notices indicate the team is gearing up for a mix of game-day service, private events and regular nightly business. Job postings on Indeed highlight Oracle Park shifts and the 701 2nd Street address, while reservations and an opening window began appearing on OpenTable in April.
For SoMa residents, office workers and baseball fans, Casa Sofia adds another full-service option within easy walking distance of the ballpark, arriving just as the Giants’ season hits its stride.
