Putnam City West High School went virtual Tuesday after what district officials called an isolated, "serious incident" involving two students near the end of the school day Monday. The move hit pause on in-person classes so investigators could work without a packed campus and so, as administrators put it, students and staff could stay safe. Families were told to check Google Classroom for updates from teachers.
District statement and police response
In a letter to families, school leaders said "All PCW students and staff will transition to virtual learning for Tuesday, April 21st" and noted that, because the matter is an active investigation, "no further information will be released at this time," according to KOCO. Officials said the temporary switch to online learning was made "out of an abundance of caution" while law enforcement continues its work.
What happened on campus
According to administrators, an altercation between two students broke out in the arena area late in the school day. The individuals involved quickly left campus, and staff then launched a fact-finding response and contacted law enforcement, as reported by KOCO. Both Putnam City Campus Police and the Oklahoma City Police Department are investigating the incident.
District safety context
Putnam City Schools operates its own campus police unit and maintains a "Crisis Incident Information" page that explains how families will be notified during on-campus situations, according to Putnam City Schools. The district has tightened security before in response to social-media threats; increased security after a social-media hoax in January 2025 was one such precaution.
What parents need to know
So far, the district has not released the names of the students involved, any potential charges, or reports of serious injuries, and has said it will share more information when appropriate. Parents were urged to keep an eye on official school communications and contact the school office with any concerns. The letter also reminded students to log into Google Classroom for directions from teachers, according to KOCO.
The investigation remains active, and Putnam City West officials say they appreciate the community's cooperation while they sort out what happened. We will update this story as officials release new information.
