A Thursday night ride on the 4 train line in the Bronx turned deadly when a man was stabbed on the 176th Street subway platform in Morris Heights and later died at the hospital, authorities and local television reports said. The attack happened around 8:30 p.m. on the southbound platform, where the victim collapsed before he was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
The initial account of the stabbing came from Univision 41, which reported that the man suffered multiple stab wounds and that the attacker took off from the scene. That brief was later republished on the Bronx page of News 12 The Bronx as a Spanish-language segment.
Subway attacks across the city
The Bronx killing was not the only subway violence that day. The incident was one of three separate stabbings across the system, including earlier attacks at the 125th Street station in Harlem and at a Brooklyn stop, according to The Associated Press. Police told reporters that no suspects in any of the three cases had been arrested and that detectives were reviewing surveillance video and witness statements.
Police release video, seek leads
Investigators released footage that appears to capture the Bronx platform assault and are urging riders to check their phones and any nearby cameras for clips that might help identify the attacker. New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell addressed the spate of subway violence at a news conference, saying "we have to deter and prevent this activity," a remark cited by The Associated Press. Univision 41 reported that the NYPD had circulated video of the Bronx attack as part of the search.
How to help investigators
Police are asking anyone who may have seen the stabbing, or who has cellphone or surveillance video from the station around the time of the attack, to come forward. Tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or the Spanish-language line at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The investigation remains active, and Bronx transit detectives are leading the probe, News 12 The Bronx reported.
