A 38-year-old man died Monday after the SUV he was driving slammed into the corner of a house in Nashville’s Antioch neighborhood, leaving his passenger fighting for her life, according to emergency officials. Crews said the vehicle also wiped out two nearby utility poles before coming to a stop. The wounded passenger was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center while officers worked the scene.

Metro Nashville Police Department investigators told WKRN the man was behind the wheel of a GMC Acadia that crossed into the opposite lane, hit two Nashville Electric Service poles, then crashed into the corner of a house near UNA-Antioch Pike and Pebble Beach Drive. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 36-year-old woman riding as a passenger was critically injured, and both victims were transported to Vanderbilt. Police said they are working to notify the driver’s family.

Crash Echoes Earlier Incidents In Antioch

Crashes that send vehicles straight into homes are not new to this part of Antioch, and neighbors have repeatedly complained about drivers speeding along local connector streets. A video of a similar collision in the neighborhood surfaced last year and was reported by WSMV, underscoring ongoing worries about basic street safety.

Investigators Will Run Toxicology Tests

The Metro Nashville Medical Examiner will conduct toxicology tests to determine whether impairment factored into Monday’s crash, WKRN reports. MNPD crash detectives are continuing to collect evidence, and officials have not released the victims’ names while they notify next of kin.
