What started as a routine hop from Chicago to New York turned into an unexpected detour and tarmac evacuation after a reported security concern forced a United Airlines flight to divert to Pittsburgh on Saturday. Passengers and crew on the O’Hare to LaGuardia run exited via inflatable slides while emergency teams surrounded the aircraft. Officials said everyone on board got off safely and unhurt as investigators moved in.
What officials say
United said Flight 2092 was diverted because of a report of a “potential security concern” and confirmed the plane landed safely in Pittsburgh. All 159 passengers and six crew members evacuated using slides, and no injuries were reported, according to NBC Chicago.
Flight tracking shows the diversion
Flight history records show UA2092, scheduled to operate between O’Hare (ORD) and LaGuardia (LGA), was flagged as diverted to Pittsburgh and made an unscheduled stop at Pittsburgh International Airport on April 18. Data on Flightradar24 lists the April 18 leg for UA2092 as “Diverted to PIT,” confirming the mid-route change.
Pittsburgh a common diversion hub
Pittsburgh International is a frequent choice for diversions, thanks to its inland location and ample runway capacity that make it practical for unplanned landings. The airport handled a near-record number of diverted flights last year, according to reporting by WPXI.
Investigation ongoing
NBC Chicago’s Pittsburgh affiliate reported that bomb-sniffing dogs and other emergency crews were on the tarmac as the aircraft was checked, and Allegheny County Police said they were assisting with the investigation. Officials have not released details about the nature of the reported security concern, and neither the airline nor local authorities has offered additional comment.
