A 19-year-old man was killed Wednesday night when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a tractor-trailer on State Road 13 in Fruit Cove, St. Johns County. The crash happened around 10:09 p.m. at the intersection of SR 13 and Otoes Place, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release summarized by Action News Jax, both the motorcycle and the semi-truck were heading north on SR 13. Troopers said the semi, traveling in the left lane, made a right turn into a shopping plaza. The motorcycle, which was in the right lane, hit the truck’s right side, throwing the rider into the roadway, where emergency crews pronounced him dead.

How Turns And Blind Spots Put Riders At Risk

Crashes where a larger vehicle turns across or into the path of a motorcycle are often among the deadliest, largely because of blind spots, wider turning paths, and the smaller visual profile of a bike. Research from the Federal Highway Administration notes that turning movements at intersections and crossing-path collisions remain a persistent source of severe and fatal crashes, which safety experts say makes these turning moments especially dangerous for motorcyclists.

Investigation Underway

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the collision and released the initial details through a news release cited by Action News Jax. Troopers are expected to review vehicle positions, interview witnesses, and analyze other evidence to piece together how the crash unfolded. Authorities say they will share additional information with the public as it becomes available.

Officials have not released any further details. Our condolences go out to the rider’s family and friends as investigators continue their work.
