Three years after two workers were gunned down inside the popular West Highland restaurant American Elm, the case remains painfully open and unsolved. Families of the victims say the lack of answers has been crushing, and neighbors are still waiting for a break that has yet to come.
The victims were identified as Emerall Vaughn‑Dahler, 34, the restaurant’s general manager, and Ignacio "Nacho" Gutierrez Morales, 58, a prep cook, who were found inside the restaurant on the 4100 block of West 38th Avenue, according to The Denver Gazette. The medical examiner ruled both deaths homicides and said Vaughn‑Dahler suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while a single gunshot wound killed Gutierrez Morales.
Investigators Still Hunting Leads
Denver police say detectives are still actively working the case, following up on leads and reviewing possible connections, but they have not identified or arrested a suspect, according to Denver7. Officials say the extensive investigative work to date has yet to yield the breakthrough they need.
Reward And Tips
The reward for information leading to an arrest has climbed to $32,600, funded by Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and community donors, per Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can remain anonymous and are urged to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720‑913‑7867 or submit tips online. The group says the special reward was boosted with money from multiple donors and participating restaurants to spark new information.
Community Reaction And Motive
The killings rattled the surrounding neighborhood and spurred fundraisers to support the victims’ families, while relatives have repeatedly pleaded for anyone with knowledge to come forward, as reported by CBS Colorado. Police have previously said "Robbery is one of the potential motivations that we're considering in this case," according to CBS.
With no arrests three years on, loved ones say they are still waiting for accountability and hoping that even a small detail from a witness could tip the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720‑913‑7867; tips can be submitted anonymously. Denver police say they remain committed to solving the killings and are urging anyone with information to contact investigators.
