Trader Joe's is gearing up for what would be its first North Park outpost, after signing a lease and filing building permit applications for space at the Lincoln Village Shopping Center near Lincoln Avenue and McCormick Road. Neighbors have been clamoring for a specialty grocer for years, and aldermanic leaders say the arrival of the popular national chain could give the far Northwest Side a much-wanted retail boost. There is still no firm timeline for construction or for the store to officially open.

In a newsletter to residents, the 50th Ward newsletter reported that Trader Joe's has applied for building permits at Lincoln Village and that "the lease is signed and Trader Joe’s has begun the permitting stage." FOX 32 Chicago also covered the announcement and noted that Ald. Debra Silverstein cautioned that the project is still in its early stages, with multiple approvals required before doors can open.

Where the North Park store would go

The planned store would slot into the long-running Lincoln Village Shopping Center along Lincoln Avenue. A LoopNet listing shows the center is anchored by Ross Dress for Less and a newly signed TJ Maxx, and it already counts Panera and Starbucks among its tenants. The same listing pegs the property’s gross leasable area at about 146,000 square feet with roughly 700 parking spaces, setting it up as a sizable draw for neighborhood shoppers. With that footprint and mix of national brands, a Trader Joe’s could cater both to nearby residents and to customers coming in from the broader North Side trade area.

Part of a larger city push

The North Park project would be one more step in Trader Joe’s broader Chicago expansion. Earlier this year, CBS Chicago reported that the chain is planning a new location in Logan Square. Around the same time, Urbanize Chicago noted that the City Council approved a Jefferson Park site that Trader Joe’s intends to build. If the North Park store moves forward, it would join this string of new and proposed locations across the city.

What's next for North Park

Silverstein has told neighbors she will keep residents posted as permitting and approvals advance, while underscoring that the project remains in its early stages. Trader Joe’s and local officials still have to navigate permits, inspections, and any landlord build-out before the company can lock in an opening date. For now, the 50th Ward office plans to share periodic updates as the permitting process unfolds, leaving North Park shoppers to wait a bit longer before they can stock up on frozen orange chicken closer to home.
