A woman being held at the Pueblo County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in her housing area Thursday and later died at a local hospital, according to authorities. Deputies and jail medical staff began life-saving efforts, which were continued by Pueblo Fire Department crews and American Medical Response while she was transported for further care.
The Pueblo County Coroner is expected to release the woman’s identity, along with the official cause and manner of death, at a later time. The sheriff’s office has opened an investigation into what happened inside the jail.
According to The Denver Post, sheriff’s officials said there were no immediate indications of foul play. Deputies found the woman in her housing area, and she was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital. The agency described its inquiry as a routine in-custody death investigation and said additional information will follow after the coroner’s review is complete.
Other In-Custody Deaths Have Drawn Local Attention
The latest death comes as Pueblo County’s detention operations are already under scrutiny from earlier in-custody fatalities.
Per the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies investigated the death of a 59-year-old man in county custody on March 17.
Local outlets, including KRDO, also reported a June 2025 case in which a 32-year-old woman was found unresponsive after a little more than 24 hours behind bars.
Investigation And Next Steps
The coroner’s autopsy in the latest case will determine the official cause and manner of death, and officials say those findings will be released when they are available.
The Denver Post reported that sheriff’s officials again emphasized there were no early signs of foul play while the investigation is ongoing.
