A routine school day at Cleveland Heights High School turned tragic on Thursday when a student suffered a medical emergency on campus and later died, according to officials. The loss has hit the Cleveland Heights–University Heights school community hard as classmates, educators and families begin to process what happened.
The Cleveland Heights–University Heights City School District confirmed the medical emergency and death to FOX 8. The district said it is not releasing the student’s name in order to protect the family’s privacy.

Heights High’s counseling office is front and center in the district’s response. The school lists four counselors, three social workers and additional student support staff who handle academic, social and emotional needs, according to Heights High's counseling page. The site also notes partnerships with MetroHealth for school-based health services and referrals for students who need more specialized care.

In a statement to FOX 8, Superintendent Liz Kirby said the district is concentrating on “ensuring students and staff have tools and supports to grieve and heal.” According to the district, social workers, counselors and administrators were made available throughout the building, and those resources will stay in place in the coming days and weeks as the school community works through its grief.
