A 4-year-old child has died after a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound at a home in Okeechobee on Tuesday. Emergency crews found the child in critical condition, and the youngster was flown by medical helicopter to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where authorities say the child later succumbed to injuries.
The Okeechobee Police Department, the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, and Okeechobee County Fire Rescue were called to the 800 block of Southeast Eighth Street at about 1:33 p.m., according to WPBF. The outlet reported that the child was found in critical condition, then flown via Life Flight to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where authorities later confirmed the child died.
Neighbors And Investigation
Neighbors said the scene unfolded suddenly and left the block rattled. "It's just sad," one resident told WPTV. The Okeechobee Police Department has described the case as an active investigation and has not released details about how the child may have obtained the firearm.
Legal Context And Safe-Storage Laws
Investigators are working to determine how the child accessed the weapon. Under Florida law, adults must keep loaded firearms in a securely locked box or secured with a trigger lock when a minor could gain access, per Fla. Stat. §790.174. The Florida Sheriffs Association urges strict safe-storage practices for families and notes that gun owners may face criminal liability if a minor gets hold of an unsecured firearm.
Authorities have not released the child's name or details about the firearm. Local outlets report that the case remains a developing investigation and that officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Okeechobee Police Department. News organizations plan to update coverage as more details become available, according to WPBF.
