A Michigan State Police trooper shot and wounded a person yesterday at a residence on South Sheridan Avenue in Muskegon Township, according to state authorities. The individual was taken to a hospital, later placed in custody, and no officers were injured. The MSP Fifth District Incident Response Team has taken over the case, and officials say the investigation remains active as evidence is collected.
According to MLive, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and the shooting happened at a home on South Sheridan Avenue. MLive reported that the person was wounded after troopers fired and was ultimately taken into custody.
Detective Lt. Ian Fields with the Michigan State Police's 5th District told FOX 17 that a subject did present a firearm and a trooper did return fire, striking that subject, adding that the person was alive at a hospital in critical condition. FOX 17 reported the scene was near the intersection of Sheridan and Apple avenues.
How the investigation will proceed
As outlined by the Michigan Department of Attorney General, officer-involved shootings handled by the MSP are typically assigned to investigators from outside the district where the incident occurred and can be reviewed by the Attorney General's office. Prior reviews show investigators rely on patrol and body-worn camera footage, 911 recordings, medical reports and witness statements as they assemble their findings.
What residents should know
Officials have not released the identity of the person who was shot, whether any charges will be filed or when investigators might release video of the incident. The MSP Fifth District lists public information contacts for the Muskegon area, and residents with tips or video from the scene have been urged to contact investigators.
The newsroom will update this report as authorities release more information and as investigators complete their review.
