A Venice neighborhood woke up to a homicide investigation today after a man was found dead in the street following an early-morning fight, according to city officials.
Officers were called around 6 a.m. today to the 200 block of South Grove Street for reports of a fight. When they arrived, they found a man unresponsive and began life-saving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. City officials said the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Another person was detained at the scene and is being questioned by detectives as part of the homicide probe. Investigators have not released additional details as they work to piece together what led up to the confrontation, according to Tampa Bay 28.
Where investigators are focusing
The Venice City Manager's Office has not released the victim's name, and police have not announced a possible motive. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Venice Police Department, which lists its nonemergency line at (941) 486-2444 and its station at 1575 E. Venice Ave on the department's Venice Police Department page.
What to expect next
Detectives are in the thick of the slow, methodical work that follows a violent crime: processing the scene, interviewing witnesses and tracking down leads. As of Monday, no charges had been announced, and authorities are still asking anyone who might have seen or heard something to reach out to the Venice Police Department or use the nonemergency line, per Tampa Bay 28.
