An afternoon pursuit through Northeast Washington, D.C., ended with one driver in handcuffs after authorities say he deliberately hit a U.S. Park Police cruiser, ditched his car and tried to make a run for it. Officers quickly flooded the area, and no injuries were reported.
According to 7News, Metro Transit Police first began chasing the driver and called in U.S. Park Police for backup around 3:30 p.m. The outlet reports the man was already wanted on a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.
Agency roles and jurisdiction
Metro Transit Police officers have tri‑jurisdictional authority across the D.C. region and regularly work alongside local and federal agencies, according to WMATA. That setup allows federal units such as U.S. Park Police to jump in when pursuits trace back to transit property or nearby streets.
Scene and arrest
Officers told 7News the driver intentionally rammed the Park Police cruiser, though the vehicle only suffered cosmetic damage. The chase came to a halt when the suspect abandoned his car at Hampshire Avenue Northeast and Rittenhouse Street Northeast. He was arrested shortly afterward. No one was hurt, and police had not released his name at the time of the report.
Anyone with information about the incident can contact Metro Transit Police at 202‑962‑2121 or text MyMTPD (696873), as noted on WMATA. Witnesses with video or tips can also use those channels to reach investigators.
