A pre-work confrontation on San Antonio’s West Side ended in gunfire Friday morning, leaving a man shot in the leg and a gunman on the loose, according to police.

Officers said the shooting unfolded around 7 a.m. off Florencia Avenue near Culebra Road after a confrontation involving a man and a woman inside a BMW. At some point during that encounter, someone opened fire and the man was struck in the leg, police told News 4 San Antonio.

Despite his injury, the victim managed to drive to a spot off Southwest 34th Street and call for help. Emergency crews took him to a hospital, where his injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The suspect took off and has not been located as detectives continue their work.

Police seeking tips and witnesses

Investigators are asking anyone who saw or heard anything, or who might have video, to contact San Antonio Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP or the SAPD non-emergency line. According to the City of San Antonio, anonymous tips can also be sent in through the P3 Tips app. Police have not released a suspect description.

West Side has seen recent shootings

The Friday morning gunfire is landing in a neighborhood that has already been on edge. Local reporting notes several recent shootings in the broader West Side area that have drawn concern from residents. Hoodline documented a March shooting on the far West Side that left a person critically wounded, and KSAT reported in February that police arrested a suspect after a man was shot in the neck near Culebra Road.

The string of incidents has renewed calls from law enforcement for community cooperation, from sharing surveillance footage to submitting tips. SAPD said the latest investigation remains active and that more information will be released as it becomes available.
