What started as a simple traffic stop in northwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday quickly escalated into an hourslong, multi-agency manhunt that froze traffic along Okeechobee Road and the area around Northwest 137th Avenue. Officers on the ground and air units swept wooded lots west of the Turnpike while frustrated drivers sat in long backups as a police perimeter stayed locked in place for hours.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers tried to pull over a white Dodge pickup headed south on Okeechobee Road near Pembroke Road when the driver refused to stop and took off, leading officers on a pursuit that ended only after the truck was abandoned and the driver bolted on foot near Northwest 137th Avenue, according to WSVN. Hialeah Police brought in K-9 teams and helped throw up a perimeter, while 7Skyforce tracked the unfolding search from above. Officials also said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined the response.
Helicopter, K-9s And Roadblocks Grind Commutes To A Halt
From the air, a police helicopter circled the search zone as officers on the ground set up blockades and K-9 units swept nearby properties, causing major headaches for anyone trying to cut through the area, according to CBS News Miami. The station reported that roads around Okeechobee Road and Northwest 137th Avenue stayed shut down for an extended stretch while investigators worked the scene and said it had reached out to the agencies involved for more details.
"The police, they don't allow us to go back there because they were looking for somebody," said driver Gus Mirand, who found himself stuck in the gridlock. He added, "The cops said you have to wait at least 30 minutes. That 30 minutes has been two hours already," CBS News Miami reported. His wait-at-least-30-minutes-that-became-two-hours story captured the mood of commuters caught up in the unfolding search.
Area No Stranger To High-Speed Drama
Multi-agency pursuits spilling into northwest Miami-Dade have become a recurring headache this year. In March, a Miami Beach chase ended with a PIT maneuver in the same general area. Incidents like these often force quick tactical decisions by Florida Highway Patrol and local officers and can leave entire neighborhoods effectively sealed off while searches play out.
During Wednesday’s hunt, authorities urged drivers to steer clear of the stretch around Okeechobee Road and warned that lanes could stay closed for some time, WSVN reported. Media outlets on scene said they would share updates once agencies released more information about the initial stop and the driver who took off.
