Genna Rae’s Wings & More, the tiny Whittier takeout counter loved for island-spiced wings and budget-friendly Big Papa burgers, has gone quiet. The front door is locked, the space is being cleared out, and the neighborhood is saying goodbye to a spot that held on for roughly a decade.
According to Westword, a storage container sat outside and a handwritten note on the wall announced, "Sat 11th is the last day Genna Rae’s will be open in Colorado! You will be missed!" The outlet reports the shop served its final guests on Saturday and that staff could not immediately be reached for comment. The closure ends a run that stretches back to about 2016, when the counter first settled into Whittier.
Menu and what set it apart
The spread at Genna Rae’s might have looked compact on paper, but it covered a lot of cravings. As listed on Genna Rae’s online menu, diners could scale up from small to large orders of wings, then run through a roster of house sauces like Mango Chili and Island Zing. The kitchen also turned out jerk chicken, catfish sandwiches, ribs, hotlinks and the 12-ounce Big Papa burger.
The same menu showed catering options and sides that regulars treated as nonnegotiable: mac & cheese, plantains and other staples of a Caribbean-leaning soul food lineup. That mix of island flavors, classic comfort food and straight-ahead burgers helped the hole-in-the-wall spot feel bigger than its square footage.
Family roots and neighborhood role
Westword reports that owner Genn Dickerson, who moved to Denver from the Virgin Islands in 1979, named the restaurant for his daughter and ran it as a family operation. The outlet notes that Dickerson’s siblings operate Welton Street Cafe in Five Points, so the loss of Genna Rae’s lands is more than just one address going dark in Denver’s small soul food scene.
For years, neighbors leaned on the counter for affordable dinners, quick takeout and those signature sauces that tended to end up on just about everything.
Where neighbors can turn
Online platforms now flag Genna Rae’s as unavailable for orders. For example, DoorDash currently lists the restaurant as "Temporarily closed." Diners looking for similar flavors can head to Welton Street Cafe in Five Points, with its hours and menu posted on the Welton Street Cafe website.
