Per What Now Los Angeles, CEO Scott Kohno said the team has had its eye on the Valley for several years and called Ventura Boulevard "ground zero for sushi in Los Angeles." He told the outlet that Yama hopes to bring a fresh grab-and-go element to the corridor and reach customers who already drive to their West L.A. outpost. The report pegs the Sherman Oaks debut for late summer.
From Fish Broker Roots To Classes And Sake
The concept dates back to 1984, when fish broker Kenzo Yamada founded the original market, and today the brand runs stores in San Gabriel, West L.A. and Koreatown, according to the Yama Sushi Marketplace. Yama pairs prepared sushi with a sizable curated sake lineup and community programming like the "Very Happiness Sushi" master class and guided tastings led by certified sake expert Narumi. That blend of retail, ready-to-eat food and education is a key part of the pitch for Sherman Oaks.

At about 7,200 square feet, the Sherman Oaks location gives Yama room for a larger back-of-house operation and expanded beverage service.
