A 35-year-old man was fatally shot early Friday on a residential block in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, according to police. Officers responding around 1:30 a.m. to the 5800 block of West Potomac Avenue found the man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died. Area Five detectives have opened a homicide investigation.
What police said
As reported by FOX 32 Chicago, the Chicago Police Department said the 35-year-old was outside when he was shot several times and later died at Stroger Hospital. The Cook County medical examiner had not yet identified the victim, the station reported. Police have not released additional details about suspects or a possible motive.
A pattern of violence on the West Side
The killing is the latest in a string of shootings on Chicago’s West Side this spring. An April fatal shooting on West Chicago Avenue drew similar concern from residents, and the Chicago Sun-Times covered a deadly North Side shooting this week that underscores a citywide spike in late-night gun violence. Neighbors and local leaders say the string of attacks has left residents on edge as detectives continue canvassing for witnesses and footage.
