Monday afternoon in Phoenix’s Biltmore area turned tense when a man walked into a Chase Bank near 27th Street and Camelback Road carrying an AK-47, fired a single round into the ceiling, then took off in a box truck, officials said. Phoenix police quickly locked onto the truck, and a K-9 unit used a Grappler device to snag it on Interstate 17, about 15 minutes north of Anthem. Officers took the suspect into custody on the freeway without injuries, and federal prosecutors are expected to pursue charges. No one inside the bank was hurt.
According to ABC15 Arizona, the robbery call came in around 12:30 p.m. from the Chase branch near Biltmore Fashion Park. Investigators say the man fired the shot, grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and bolted for the waiting box truck. A Phoenix Police air unit tracked the vehicle up I-17 until the K-9 team deployed the Grappler to bring it to a stop. The unidentified suspect was arrested on the interstate and is expected to face federal bank-robbery charges. Authorities again stressed that nobody inside the bank was injured.
Federal charges and the law
Because the target was a bank and the suspect allegedly used a long-arm rifle, federal statutes come into play, notably the offense described in 18 U.S.C. § 2113. The statute, as outlined by Cornell Law School, covers federal bank-robbery crimes and includes enhanced penalties when a dangerous weapon is involved. In Arizona, cases like this are typically handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, and recent press releases from that office show prosecutors routinely seek substantial prison terms in armed bank-robbery cases. For additional context, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona regularly publishes press releases summarizing federal cases and outcomes in the district.
Where it happened and what investigators are saying
The Chase branch sits in Phoenix’s Biltmore area, and ABC15 Arizona reports that investigators have not yet released the suspect’s identity. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the robbery or the suspect to contact local law enforcement as the FBI and Phoenix police continue their investigation.
