An Amazon delivery stop in Miami Gardens turned into a frightening sprint for safety on Friday, after police say a 27-year-old man came at a driver with a machete while she was just trying to drop off a package.
Miami Gardens officers arrested Fabrice Jack Janvier after the driver reported that he came out of a nearby house and allegedly attacked her with the blade while she was making a delivery. According to police, she bolted back to her vehicle and drove off, avoiding injury. Officers later tracked Janvier to a nearby home and took him into custody. No one was hurt, and authorities say the case is still under investigation.
According to Local 10, officers arrested Janvier along the 900 block of Northwest 196th Terrace after the driver told police he had stepped out of the house next door and thrown a machete in her direction. An arrest form states Janvier then picked the weapon back up, "raising it as if he intended to strike her," and chased after the driver until she made it back to her vehicle and escaped.
Police reportedly saw the machete inside the residence and, with help from Janvier's father, were able to get him to walk out of the home so he could be detained without incident.
Where he's being held
Local reports indicate Janvier was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and was being held on a $10,000 bond. The Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department runs an online in-custody search and facility pages that let the public check booking and custody status, including information about Turner Guilford Knight. Miami-Dade County lists Turner Guilford Knight as its main pretrial detention facility.
Delivery drivers' safety concerns
This latest scare lands on top of a growing stack of incidents involving local delivery workers. In March, Local 10 reported on an Amazon driver who was struck by a car while delivering packages, noting the company said it was cooperating with investigators. Drivers and community advocates have been voicing safety worries after several high-profile cases in Miami-Dade this year.
Charges and legal context
Janvier faces a charge of attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a felony under Florida law. Aggravated assault is generally treated as a third-degree felony and can be raised to a second-degree offense in some situations, under the Florida Statutes governing assault and related crimes. Penalties depend on the degree of the offense and any enhancements, and this case will move forward in the county court system.
Investigators continue to look into what happened. Future court filings and public records are expected to shed more light as the case progresses.
