A Shelby County inmate died Wednesday after being taken by ambulance from a county facility to a Memphis hospital, county officials said. The man, identified by the county as Demarcus Kerr, arrived unresponsive at St. Francis Hospital and was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is underway to determine both the cause and manner of his death.
In a statement to WREG, county spokesperson Kelly Roberts said Kerr "died at the hospital for 'unknown medical reasons'" and confirmed that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has been notified and will conduct any resulting investigations. Officials said Kerr had been housed at the corrections facility located at the penal farm in Shelby Farms. They declined to release additional details while the autopsy and administrative reviews are in progress.
Investigation and autopsy
The county medical examiner is responsible for the autopsy, a process that typically includes toxicology testing along with other forensic work that can delay a final ruling. According to the Tennessee Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, such examinations are designed to be comprehensive and can take anywhere from several days to multiple weeks, depending on the scope of testing.
Background: Recent in-custody deaths
Kerr’s death comes amid a series of in-custody fatalities at Shelby County facilities that local outlets have been tracking closely. Coverage from The Daily Memphian and reporting that an autopsy ties overdose to Memphis inmate's death at 201 Poplar have helped fuel renewed calls for reforms at county lockups.
What comes next
The Sheriff’s Office has said it will review the circumstances surrounding Kerr’s death and plans to release more information after the autopsy is complete. Earlier cases have raised questions about how and when outside agencies get involved. Past reporting shows state investigators were not always immediately asked to open probes into previous in-custody deaths, a pattern that has pushed advocates to demand clearer oversight, according to Action News 5. County officials have not given a timeline for when autopsy results in Kerr’s case might be available, spokespersons told WREG.
