Federal and local law enforcement tracked down 31 missing children across Arizona in a coordinated push that wrapped up Friday, pulling kids out of what officials describe as immediately dangerous situations and back into the care of protective services.
According to 12News, the operation turned up 20 children during an intensive weeklong sweep, with U.S. Marshals confirming 11 additional recoveries elsewhere in the state for a total of 31. Some of the kids were believed to be victims of sex trafficking, while others were dealing with homelessness when they were found.
Operation Desert Dawn and the marshals' role
The weeklong sweep, dubbed Operation Desert Dawn, was run by the U.S. Marshals Service alongside local task forces and partner agencies and concluded Friday, officials said. In a news release, the Marshals described the push as a targeted effort to locate "critically missing" juveniles and move them into safety and services, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Who the children were and where they were found
Officials told 12News that the recovered juveniles included young people who had been missing for months, along with some who were being exploited. One child, reported missing from Phoenix, had been gone for about 18 months before being located, according to the outlet.
What happens next
Authorities say the children will be referred to child-welfare and victim-services partners while criminal investigations continue in cases where trafficking or exploitation is suspected. Anyone with information about a missing child is urged to contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or reach out to local law enforcement.
Legal and investigative follow-up
When juveniles are identified as potential trafficking victims, cases typically draw in federal and local prosecutors along with specialized victim-advocate teams, and any arrests or charges depend on what investigators uncover. Officials noted that many of the related investigations remain active and asked the public to send tips through established channels so those cases can move forward.
