How Investigators Piece Crashes Together
Crash investigators typically reconstruct scenes, review vehicle damage and markings, and, when available, retrieve event data recorder information from vehicles to better understand what happened in the moments before impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that data from these recorders, combined with careful scene documentation, is a standard tool used to help determine the sequence of events in serious crashes.
