A baby girl was fatally stabbed inside a Southwest Side home early Friday, a killing that sent first responders racing to the scene and left a quiet Chicago block reeling.
Chicago police said officers were called around 7:20 a.m. to the 3000 block of West 59th Street, where they found the child with a stab wound to the chest. She was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police told CBS Chicago.
Investigators recovered a knife inside the home, according to the same outlet. Police also said a person at the scene jumped from an upper-level window and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where their condition was stabilized. That individual was taken into custody, and authorities said charges are pending.
Comer Children’s and emergency care
Comer Children’s Hospital, part of University of Chicago Medicine and located at 5721 South Maryland Avenue, serves as the South Side’s Level I pediatric trauma center, according to UChicago Medicine. That status means Comer is equipped to handle the city’s most critically injured children, with specialized surgical teams and intensive care on site.
The hospital also functions as the region’s primary pediatric referral center for serious emergencies, so when the call came in about the gravely injured baby, she was brought to the place designed for the worst of the worst cases.
Investigation and next steps
Detectives are still working to piece together what led to the stabbing, and police emphasized that the investigation remains active, according to CBS Chicago. Authorities have not yet released information about the suspect’s identity or any possible motive, saying only that more details will follow as the probe moves forward and potential charges are finalized.
