A Thursday afternoon workout at the Ballard LA Fitness turned surreal when a man in his 50s fell through the gym ceiling, dropping about 15 feet and knocking himself unconscious, according to Seattle police. Officers were called around 3 p.m., and the man was taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police said they believed he was experiencing a mental-health crisis and that he is facing property-damage charges.
Witnesses told officers the man went into both the women’s and men’s restrooms, then disappeared into a ceiling space. A gym patron later reported seeing the man's foot punch through a ceiling tile, according to KIRO 7. Gym staff told police the man ultimately fell through the ceiling and was knocked unconscious. Seattle police said he was transported to Harborview and is facing property-destruction charges.
Where it happened
The incident took place at the LA Fitness Ballard club at 1416 NW Ballard Way. The club’s online listing confirms that address and notes amenities such as locker rooms and an indoor pool, details that help explain why members were inside the building when the ceiling collapse occurred, according to the club’s site.
Charges and the law
Seattle police reported the man is facing property-damage charges. Washington’s malicious-mischief statutes set penalties that increase with the value and nature of the damage. Third-degree mischief is a gross misdemeanor, and higher degrees can be felonies, as outlined in RCW 9A.48.
Hospital care and mental-health concerns
Officers told investigators they believed the man was experiencing a mental-health crisis and that he may have been unaware of the fall, according to KIRO 7. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center, which serves as the region’s Level I trauma center, according to UW Medicine.
