A quiet Sunday evening in Biscayne Gardens turned into a crime scene after a woman’s body was recovered from a canal in the unincorporated Miami-Dade neighborhood, authorities said. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office homicide unit has taken over the case.
What we know
Deputies were dispatched just before 5:45 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a body in the water, according to WPLG Local 10. Responding units found the woman floating in a canal near State Road 9 and Northwest 155th Lane, not far from the borders of Miami Gardens and Opa-locka.
As of Sunday evening, deputies had not said whether they suspect foul play, and the woman’s identity has not been released, WPLG Local 10 reported.
Where it happened
Biscayne Gardens is a census-designated place in northeast Miami-Dade County, bordered by Miami Gardens, Opa-locka and North Miami, sitting about 11 miles north of downtown Miami. State Road 9 cuts through the community, which is laced with canals and smaller waterways that feed into the county drainage system, according to geographic profiles of the CDP.
Investigators' update
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said its homicide detectives have assumed the investigation and are working to determine how and why the woman ended up in the canal. Officials have not released the victim’s name or a cause of death while the probe continues, and the agency told reporters it will provide updates when more information is available, WPLG Local 10 noted from an MDSO spokesperson.
Canal recoveries are recurring
Sadly, canal and off-road waterway scenes are a familiar assignment for South Florida law enforcement, with sheriff’s deputies responding to similar death investigations in recent months and years. The Miami Herald and NBC 6 have both documented canal recoveries and related sheriff’s investigations in the county over the past year.
What comes next
Investigators are expected to continue processing the scene, and the woman’s remains will typically be turned over to the medical examiner for identification and a determination of cause of death. For official updates or contact information, visit the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
