A man died last Friday after drowning at Black's Beach, according to the San Diego Police Department, turning a late-day outing into a frantic effort to save his life.

Officers were called to the beach just before 8 PM after reports of a man lying motionless near the shoreline. A 9-1-1 caller started CPR on the spot, and lifeguards quickly took over when they arrived. Multiple lifeguards and medics continued life-saving efforts on the sand but were unable to revive the victim.

His identity has not yet been released, and California State Parks will lead the investigation into what happened, 10News reported. The station noted that emergency crews tried to resuscitate the man at the scene but ultimately could not save him.

Black's Beach Hazards And Lifeguards

Black's Beach sits at the base of imposing 300-foot cliffs and has a reputation for being as tricky to reach as it is beautiful. The City of San Diego's lifeguard page warns that access trails are unimproved and can be blocked or narrowed by high tides or heavy surf, which makes it harder for emergency crews to move quickly.

While there are permanent lifeguard stations, the combination of steep bluffs, shifting sand and powerful ocean conditions can complicate even routine responses. A simple walk along the shore can turn risky fast when the tide comes in or the surf kicks up.

Previous Deadly Incidents Along The Shoreline

This stretch of coastline has seen tragedy before. In 2023, two human-smuggling boats capsized off Black's Beach, killing eight people, as the Los Angeles Times reported.

What Investigators Will Look At

California State Parks will investigate the drowning, and officials have not released the victim's name while they notify the family, 10News reported. Authorities are expected to review beach conditions, response times, and witness accounts to determine which factors played a role.

The county medical examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death, which could include an autopsy as part of the standard review in a drowning case.
