A Broward County man with gunshot wounds wound up at the corner of North 56th Avenue and Sheridan Street in Hollywood on Thursday afternoon, still behind the wheel and driving erratically before he came to a stop. Firefighters and deputies jumped in to start life-saving care on the street, and the man was rushed to a local hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. Investigators say the shooting stretched across two locations in West Park and Hollywood as authorities work to track down whoever pulled the trigger.

How the scenes unfolded

According to Local 10, a 911 caller reported around 11:45 a.m. that a man had been shot and was on his way to a hospital. Deputies instead found the victim a short drive away, just north of Sheridan Street and 56th Avenue in Hollywood, where Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took him to a hospital with injuries officials again described as not life-threatening. Detectives with BSO’s Violent Crime Unit have now opened a full investigation into the daytime shooting.

Investigators canvass West Park

As reported by CBS News Miami, investigators believe the gunfire first erupted near Mary Saunders Park in West Park, and that the wounded driver then headed into Hollywood before stopping at the Sheridan and 56th intersection. BSO’s Violent Crime Unit spent the afternoon canvassing the West Park neighborhood, snapping photos, marking evidence, and zeroing in on a black Nissan that is now central to the case. The car showed damage to the driver’s-side door and at least two bullet holes. The sheriff’s office said no one is in custody and the search for a suspect continues.

Where it may have started

Mary Saunders Park, listed at 4750 SW 21st Street in West Park in City of West Park records, sits just a few blocks from the Hollywood border. The green space has been the focus of recent improvement projects and is ringed by residential streets, where neighbors told reporters the crack of gunfire carried clearly across the area just before noon.

Neighbors alarmed, investigators seek tips

Neighbors said they heard somewhere between two and five shots in quick succession late in the morning, and one mother told reporters she was stunned that gunfire erupted at that hour in a neighborhood where deputies are a regular sight. “BSO is always around here. So I'm very shocked they did it in the morning at that,” she said, according to CBS News Miami. Anyone with information is asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), the county’s anonymous tip line.
