Library Road in Bethel Park turned into a parking lot Wednesday morning after a bomb squad response sent police and emergency crews swarming the Walmart at the Bethel Park Shopping Center. Sections of the busy complex were temporarily shut down as officers ringed the building and investigators got to work.
According to WTAE, the Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called in, and Bethel Park police closed Library Road at the entrance to the shopping center while they handled what dispatchers labeled an "emergency situation." Sky 4 helicopter footage showed police positioned around the store, and Action News 4 said a crew was on the ground following developments.
WPXI reported the incident in the 5000 block of Library Road, at the Bethel Park Shopping Center, which includes both a Walmart and a Giant Eagle, and said some businesses were being evacuated. The station also noted that Allegheny County police confirmed their Explosive Ordnance Disposal team had been brought in to assist.
Walmart And Police Keep Details Tight
Walmart told Channel 11, "The safety of our customers and associates is a top priority, and we will work closely with law enforcement throughout the investigation," according to WPXI. Bethel Park police did not immediately release more information about what exactly triggered the emergency response.
What The Bomb Squad Brings To The Scene
The Allegheny County Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is trained to identify, make safe, and dispose of explosive hazards and is typically called in by local departments when a suspicious item turns up, according to the county's specialty units overview. The unit responds to suspected or confirmed explosive devices and conducts post-blast investigations when needed, which helps explain why county technicians were sent to the shopping center. Traffic Jams And Lingering Questions
The shutdown of Library Road created significant morning delays as drivers were urged to steer clear of the area while first responders worked, WTAE reported. Local TV crews stayed on scene, providing live updates as investigators remained at the shopping center into the morning.
Authorities have not announced any injuries or identified any suspects. Bethel Park police say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with information to contact local law enforcement. Details remain scarce.
