What prosecutors say started as weeks of explicit online chats ended in handcuffs in a Milpitas motel parking lot. Last Thursday, a Brentwood man was arrested after authorities say he showed up to meet what he believed was the cousin of a 14-year-old girl and handed over $20 in cash to get a room key.
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Eduardo Landaverdes and say he used the screen name "ghostmakesbank" while messaging on an app called Fet, according to The Mercury News. A criminal complaint alleges Landaverdes had been communicating for several weeks with an undercover decoy, arrived at the prearranged meeting carrying a condom, handed the agent $20 in exchange for a motel room key, and sent a video prosecutors say showed a prior encounter with a minor. The complaint quotes him writing, "I just gotta hope your not a cop or sum (sic)," and court records show he is now charged with attempted child coercion, a count that carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and up to a potential life sentence.
Charges and federal context
The 10-year mandatory minimum prosecutors cite tracks with federal sex-trafficking law for cases involving victims between 14 and 17 years old. Under 18 U.S.C. § 1591, Congress defined sex trafficking, what counts as a "commercial sex act," and the penalties that apply in such cases, according to the U.S. Code text at LII / Cornell Law School.
Part of a broader regional sting effort
Authorities say the Milpitas bust is one piece of a larger Bay Area push in which officers pose as minors online to intercept would-be predators before they ever meet a real child. Recent operations include a Newark sting that led to three arrests and a multi-day Menlo Park effort, signaling what appears to be coordinated regional enforcement activity, per Hoodline.
Court status
Landaverdes was taken into custody last Thursday and has not yet entered a plea, according to court records cited by The Mercury News. The case remains under active investigation and is moving through the courts as prosecutors evaluate the evidence and decide next steps.
