Monday morning turned rough in Fordham Heights when a firefighter was injured while battling a fourth-floor apartment fire at 2176 Tiebout Ave. The blaze sparked around 8 a.m., sending heavy smoke across the neighborhood as crews moved in. Neighbors said multiple ladder trucks and ambulances jammed the block while firefighters worked to knock the flames down.
FDNY officials said they received a call about a fire on the building’s fourth floor around 8 a.m., and that more than 70 fire and EMS personnel poured into the scene, according to News 12 New York. The same outlet reported that one person was checked out by medics on-site and did not need to be taken to the hospital.
Bronx fires keep neighborhood on edge
This Tiebout Avenue fire comes just days after a fast-moving apartment blaze on Bainbridge Avenue that hospitalized five people, three of them critically, as local outlets reported; Bainbridge Ave inferno has full coverage. Taken together, the incidents have put fresh pressure on building safety and fire prevention across the neighborhood.
Building profile and FDNY safety push
City records list 2176 Tiebout Ave as a six-story, multiunit building, a New Law tenement design that is common in this part of the Bronx, according to NYC.gov. In late April, the FDNY rolled out a public service announcement urging New Yorkers to “close the door” when escaping a fire, a simple move officials say can slow flames and smoke and reduce harm to both residents and first responders. The PSA is posted on the department’s website, FDNY.
As of early reports, the department had not released further details on the injured firefighter’s condition; News 12 New York noted only that the firefighter was hurt while responding to the blaze. We will update this story as officials release more information.
