The overhaul includes a redesigned lobby, living-room style suites and a 317-gallon aquarium, all intended to make difficult visits feel a little more dignified and less clinical.
New space aims to soothe families
Hospital leaders and board members gathered for the ceremony, where board chair Jeff Menkes reminded guests that “the sensitivity has to begin from the moment you walk in the door.” President Michael Fosina told attendees that the renovations are designed to support families emotionally and spiritually throughout a patient’s care.
Hospital officials also told reporters that Calvary handles roughly 20% of cancer-related deaths in the New York metro area, a figure leaders said highlights just how many families rely on the hospital at some of the hardest moments in their lives, as reported by News 12 The Bronx.
Calvary's role in the city
Founded in 1899, Calvary is the nation's only fully accredited acute-care specialty hospital that is exclusively devoted to adult palliative care. It cares for more than 6,000 patients and families each year across its inpatient and community programs.
